Corona won’t quit as impeachment trial nears

CHIEF Justice Renato Corona will use his upcoming impeachment trial to defend his principles and the judiciary despite calls for him to resign to save the nation from a protracted legal proceeding.
Not everyone is given the chance to define one’s character and that his battle had been transformed from a personal one to that being a fight for democracy, Corona told reporters following a mass Wednesday night at the Supreme Court.
“This is an official fight for the judiciary and democracy. If this is just for me, there’s an easy way to solve this predicament but apparently this fight is not just mine alone. We will tell everyone what is appropriate under the Constitution,” he said.

Corona’s statement came after his prosecutors at the House of Representatives maintained that the impeachment complaint had been properly verified, contrary to the manifestations made by the his camp with the Senate.
The same prosecutors also opened the option for Corona to resign in light of fresh allegations that he might had used ill-gotten wealth for the purchase of a posh condominium unit in Taguig City two years ago.
“The resignation of the Chief Justice would be a welcome development. Removing him is the ultimate penalty, and if he resigns, we would have accomplished our objective,” Marikina Representative Miro Quimbo, a member of the 11-man prosecution panel, had said.
But Corona has since made his intention to face the charges head on, a position repeatedly echoed by SC spokesperson Midas Marquez.
Five petitions were already filed with the High Court seeking to stop the impeachment trial of Corona for being illegal and unconstitutional.
They said that the complaint transmitted by 188 congressmen to the Senate should be junked for failure to comply with the requirement for verification under the Constitution and that the complaint disregarded due process.
Justices will deliberate on these petitions on January 17, a day after the Senate will reconvene as an impeachment court. Corona is expected to take no part in the full-court session. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
