Police, military deputized for special Zambales elections
Tuesday, January 17, 2012
LAW enforcement agencies and instrumentalities, including the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), were deputized to assist the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in ensuring orderly and honest special election in the 2nd district of Zambales.
Set for February 4, 2012, the polls will determine who will occupy the position left by Representative Antonio Magsaysay Diaz who died last year.
By virtue of Memorandum Order 29 signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. on January 9, 2012, President Benigno Aquino III agreed to Comelec Resolution No. 9312.
The resolution requested his “concurrence in the deputation of law enforcement agencies and other instrumentalities of the government” in connection with the special elections.
The chief executive also ordered the agencies to coordinate and cooperate with the Comelec in the performance of their duties and functions.
The memorandum shall take effect immediately.
Diaz, who was a nephew of former President Ramon Magsaysay, died on August 3, 2011 due to multiple organ failure secondary to sepsis and pneumonia.
The Comelec will be implementing a gun ban in Olongapo City and 13 other towns in Zambales for the start of the special elections in the second district of the province.
The election body’s guidelines said any private individual, incumbent officials, or political candidates are prohibited to carry firearms or hire armed personnel during the congressional election.
Campaign period will start on January 19 to February 2. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
