Senate to tighten security during impeachment trial

THE Senate, which will convene as an impeachment court on Monday, will have tighter security during the trial, including around 40 anti-riot police to keep rallyists from disrupting proceedings.
According to Manuel Parlade, director of the Security Enforcement Service of the Office of the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms (Ossaa) that will handle secure the Senate building, anti-riot police will be deployed near the Film Center of the Philippines. The film center is at the mouth of a side road that leads into the Government Service Insurance System building where the Senate is.
“Rallyists will come from both sides. That’s why we asked for back up from the police,” Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Jose Balajadia Jr. said.

The Senate will also have sniffer dogs from the Philippine Air Force to screen for explosives. The Philippine National Police unit detailed to the Senate will also guard the restricted-access parking lot and the perimeter of the Senate.
“CCTV (closed-circuit television) cameras will be installed in strategic locations such as the police outposts near the Senate, the parking lots, and inside the building. A paging system for vehicles parked outside the Senate premises will also be installed,” Parlade said.
Vehicles entering the Senate will need pre-issued gate passes. Balajadia said around 900 gate passes were issued but those vehicles will have to contend for 274 available parking slots. Parking spaces have been reserved for television vans and for the prosecution and defense panels but everybody else will be allowed to park on a first come-first served basis.
“Guests will also be restricted to designated areas and will not be allowed to roam around. Those in the Plenary Hall will not be allowed to take pictures or videos of the proceedings so as not to disrupt the trial. All cellular phones, beepers or other communication devices must be turned off once the guests enter the Plenary Hall,” Anthony Samonte, also with the Office of the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms, said.
Balajadia said the Ossaa and police will watch out for terrorist threats, but made clear that there are no known threats. Earlier this week, police were on alert against terrorists during the Feast of the Black Nazarene, a local religious festival in Manila.
Senate Secretary Emma Lirio-Reyes has also ordered strict enforcement of a No ID, No Entry policy during the trial.
Only those with IDs made especially for the trial will be allowed to enter the Plenary Hall. The Senate will distribute 175 guest passes a day, with 25 of those reserved for senior citizens.
