Senator-judges urged to warn Corona on impeachment rules

MANILA — Senator-judges should remind Chief Justice Renato Corona on the rules of impeachment after he supposedly discussed the merits of the case in public while in front of his supporters just hours before the trial.
After attending a mass and a flag-raising ceremony in the Supreme Court (SC), Corona vowed to face the impeachment trial. He answered one by one the list of properties earlier bared by the prosecution panel.
The Chief Justice admitted he was a roadblock in the agenda of three individuals in government — one who wanted to stop the distribution of Hacienda Luisita, another “who really wants to be vice-president but lost in the election in 2010”, and someone vying for the Chief Justice post.
Deputy Speaker Lorenzo “Erin” Taňada III, spokesperson of the prosecution team, said Corona was “diverting the issue” and denied that there was a conspiracy to remove Corona as SC chief.
“Ang conspirators ay ang taong-bayan. This (impeachment) is a conspiracy of people who are frustrated with the Chief Justice,” Taňada said in a press briefing.
He added that while the prosecution panel has been very careful avoiding to discuss the merits of the impeachment case, Corona already answered some of the accusations thrown against him before the public.
Section 18 of the rules of impeachment enjoins prosecutors, senator-judges, the person impeached, their counsel and witnesses to refrain from “making any comments and disclosures in public pertaining to the merits of a pending impeachment trial.”
Taňada said that while the case is already within the jurisdiction of the Senate acting as an impeachment court, they should remind the Chief Justice of the same impeachment rule they have used to warn the prosecutors. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
