MANILA, Philippines — While others let their birthdays pass by, for someone who celebrates her birthday after every four years only, she specially marks this Leap Day as she officially turns eight.
For Merriam Dy, project officer, being born in leap year did not mean four times fewer birthday wishes. In fact each year for the past 32 years of her life was always filled with it. “Whether I see my birth date on the calendar or not, I always wish that every year will be great for me and my family. But during leap years, I wish for it four times more,” she said.
But Dy admitted that in non-leap years, as her birthday approaches, the feeling of anticipation always gets the better of her. “Sometimes I have this unfair feeling because unlike others who celebrate their birthdays on the exact date every year, I rarely do. I find it hard to explain and answer people’s questions on how I celebrate my birthday in non-leap years,” she said, adding that it even led her to wait anxiously on who will send her birthday greetings given that the calendar skipped her birthday.
Though Dy mused that having a leap day for a birthday has its own advantages. “I could celebrate it either on February 28 or March 1, and if luckier, both!” she said.
But in her childhood days, Merriam recalled celebrating her birthday on March 1 and not minding the fuss about her unusual birth date. “It is because my parents make sure that I enjoy my birthday, whether it exists in the calendar or not.”
Now that she is married, Merriam said that she celebrates her birthday on February 28 in non-leap years. “My husband said that celebrating it on a February than March is closer to my real birth date.”
A leap day is an extra day added on the month of February during a leap year, making the year 366 days long, unlike a common year with a 365-day cycle. Nearly every four years is a Leap Year in the modern Gregorian calendar.
Like any other uncommon occurrences, a leap day has its own superstitions from various cultures.
Irish legend revealed that women are allowed to propose to men every four years. But when rejected, tradition imposes dire consequences on men. In some places, a man was expected to pay a penalty, such as a gown or money, if he refused a marriage proposal from a woman on Leap Day.
