Damaged dike threatens safety of residents

ARAYAT – Local leaders in three villages here have expressed their worry for the safety of their constituents as the damages to several portions of the major dike here remain unattended several months after the recent typhoons.
Nazario Vinuya, village chief in Mapalad, said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) failed to rehabilitate the scourged portion of the Arayat-Apalit setback levee in their area, despite continuing request made by them.
Vinuya said the dike was destroyed in the latter part of last year when the province was bombarded by a series of
typhoons.
He said if the same volume of water during Typhoon Pedring will again cross the Pampanga River, thousands are threatened to be displaced considering that the damage sustained by the dike is yet to be addressed by the DPWH.
Vinuya likewise cited that the dike’s portion in Barangay Batasan is also in the same condition.
“Kapag malakas na ang ulan ay binabantayan na namin ang aming lugar. Bente-kuatro oras na ang ginagawa naming monitoring para hindi kami mabigla ng pagdating ng tubig,” he said.
Manuel Suva, Guemasan village chief, also noted that the dike in between their locality and Cupang village is also still in a “sorry state.” (Herbert P. Mapiles)
