Security foremost in Maleldo 2012 observance
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Heightened security for the safety of foreign and local tourists will be foremost in the observance of Maleldo 2012 in this city during Holy Week.
This, as an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 spectators, according to members of the Maleldo 2012 working committee, are expected to troop to three “crucifixion” sites in barangays San Juan, Sta. Lucia and the main “Golgotta” in San Pedro Cutud to witness the traditional Via Crucis, which is on its 50th year.
“The City Government is intervening in security measures for the safety of foreign and local tourists, especially that we have foreign dignitaries and ambassadors who have signified their intention to watch and join in the observance of the Via Crucis on April 6. We will have augmentation forces from the Police Regional Office 3 (Central Luzon) in Camp Olivas,” said Councilor Jimmy Lazatin, chairman of the Maleldo 2012 working committee.
“As in the past, Maleldo 2012 and the re-enactment of the crucifixion rites or Via Crucis is not a promotional event, but rather our way of preserving the tradition and culture of Kapampangans handed down to us since it first started in 1962. It is not commercial in any way and even penitents are not paid for their acts,” he added.
To beef up safety, Lazatin said, the City Health Office (CHO) headed by Dr. Eloisa Aquino, will field 16 emergency medical teams in the sites, on top of roving crews which will be posted in strategic areas starting Monday.
To ensure that penitents and flagellants will not be infected by blood-borne diseases, Aquino added, the CHO will sterilize nails and instruments to be used in the event.
Traffic Management Group head Pines Pineda also assured motorists and pedestrians that traffic going to the crucifixion areas will be fine tuned to avoid overcrowding and jams that could cause inconvenience.
Plenty of parking spaces near the Via Crucis sites have also been identified and marked, he said.
Co-chairman Engr. Marni Castro, meanwhile, said foreigners will not be allowed to join in the actual rites, nailing on the cross or even as flagellants to avoid making the Via Crucis controversial and commercial.
Rites in Barangay San Juan will start at 9 a.m. while the Via Crucis at Sta. Lucia will commence at 10 a.m., followed by the re-enactment at San Pedro Cutud at 11 a.m., with the actual “nailing on the cross” around 1 p.m.
For his part, Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, in his message, invited everyone to join the city in reflecting Christ’s sufferings to save mankind.
“The season of Lent shows how we Fernandinos value our beliefs by preserving our rich heritage and culture. We invite you to join the city during the Maleldo 2012 rites to reflect on Christ’s suffering to save mankind,” he said.
“I also encourage locals and tourists to use this opportune time to discover San Fernando’s places of solitude by visiting the many churches found in the city. As Christians flock to our city to remember the Lord’s passion, the City Government ensures public safety and order. Through our interventions, we expect a peaceful and solemn Maleldo,” he added.
