Wine imports surge
Wine drinkers are being spoilt for choice because of a surge in imports, figures reveal.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released yesterday show wine imports grew 4.2 per cent to 67 million litres in 2010-2011 as wine exports dropped 5.2 per cent to 746 million litres.
But there was a marked increase in the value of domestic sales of Australian wines, which increased 9.8 per cent to 2.3 billion litres.
There were 1.6 million tonnes of grapes crushed last financial year, a 1.6 per cent increase.
WA winemakers were unfazed by the increase in wine imports, saying they reflected the increase in price and quality of local wine.
Margaret River Wine Industry Association president Nigel Gallop said the region unabashedly catered for the high end of the market.
“The Australian industry now tends to focus more on quality and perhaps people are looking offshore for the cheaper stuff,” he said.
“My suspicion is that cheap wine is being imported for the cask market.”
The fact is that Margaret River is not a source for cheap wines, and in terms of sheer volume we do not produce very much, but what it does produce punches far above its weight.
“The high Australian dollar, meant there has been a marginal increase in some wines from France or Italy, but there has not been an impact on our market.”
WA Wine Industry president Redmond Sweeny said there were signs of optimism within the industry. The inventory of Australian wine – or backlog – was decreasing, meaning the grape glut could be decreasing.
“There is a significant amount of exports to Asia which is driving this and, and that means there is a lot more of a turn around,” he said.
“There’s lots of activity and prices are coming back to a sustainable level.
“It’s not all doom and gloom.
ABS statistics show about 1.12 billion litres of beverage wine was produced, a decrease of .02 per cent on last financial year.
