1st ‘green’ cold storage facility unveiled

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The first environment-friendly cold storage facility in the Philippines was unveiled by officials and executives at the Alma Refrigeration and Cold Storage Inc. (ALMA) in Barangay San Agustin, this city, over the weekend.
ALMA president and chief executive officer Alfredo Lagman Jr. said the firm’s new facility is state-of-the-art and houses modern energy efficient refrigeration equipment that uses non-toxic and harmless refrigerants, including cold room lighting from light emitting diodes or LEDs.
The facility, Lagman said, helps in the reduction of carbon emissions or footprints, and qualifies for “green compliance requirement,” as certified by Starking Inc., a duly registered all-Filipino engineering and contracting company in the field of Industrial Refrigeration and Heat Transfer Technology.
“This is a big investment that the company decided to pour to provide the best services to our clientele — big firms from all over Luzon — using the latest in cold storage technology and at the same time, giving protection to the environment,” Lagman said.
He said the facility, the latest addition to 15 newly built, fully equipped rentable cold storage rooms with cooling temperatures of up to minus 28 degrees Celsius, makes the plant the biggest in North Luzon, with an aggregate refrigerated area of about 6,600 square meters manned 24/7 by trained personnel.
“Our vision is to make Pampanga the food capital of the Philippines especially with the growing demand for dry chilled food products. This latest cold storage is hoped to provide more cold storage for our clients and offer options for more companies seeking facilities that are kind to environment even as they provide the best possible services to keep their products fresh and safe. The facility would also of big help to our farmers and other agricultural entrepreneurs who need post-harvest facilities,” added Lagman.
Senator Francis Pangilinan, chair of the Senate’s committee on agriculture, said he is fully supporting ALMA’s moves to help in agricultural infrastructure build up.
“This facility is definitely a big boost in agriculture infrastructure. The Senate will certainly support such moves and we would explore public-private partnerships to help firms like ALMA which provide opportunities and breakthroughs for the greater benefit of the Filipinos,” Pangilinan said.
