Capitol willing to keep science high school

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Provincial Government is willing to keep the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) in Pampanga after its purported and “non-pursued” contract with the Clark Development Corporation (CDC) where it is currently located.
In talks at the Capitol late Tuesday initiated by Board Member Ricardo Yabut and facilitated by government executive Rosve Henson, PSHS Central Luzon Campus director Lilia Habacon told Governor Lilia Pineda that their supposed to be contract with the CDC, inked 2009, will end 2013 with no “positive” signs of renewal, since the campus sits on an ancestral domain site.
“Our contract with CDC ends 2013. Apparently, we could not see hope of renewal despite their continuing promises. Our students meet under trees and sleep under mosquito nets. That is why we decided to seek the governor’s help in our situation. We are the Central Luzon campus of more than 540 scholars in the country, the best of the best, which honestly our Quezon City campus could no longer contain. We prefer to stay in Pampanga since it’s the best strategic point in Luzon. We have our budget for infrastructure needed, but the site, as CDC promised a long time ago, is wishful thinking,” Habacon told Sun.Star Pampanga.
She said the Provincial Governments of Bataan, Bulacan and Zambales had hinted their intentions to house the premier high school, but they would prefer staying in Pampanga — the crossroads of Central Luzon — much that the province and Pineda are so strong in education advocacies.
It has been a year, Habacon said, that CDC promised to give them the “permanent site but to no avail.”
Instantly, with the presence of PSHS officials and soon-to-be PSHS host Pampanga Agricultural College (PAC) officials, talks took into positive turns with paper works in the making in the days to come.
“We will be so happy to accommodate them at PAC. The 10 hectares they need is there. Much more, we could complement each other in science and technology. A PSHS campus at PAC is a most welcome development,” said Dr. Andres Soriano Jr., president of PAC.
Pineda said the Capitol is willing to support PSHS’ needs in infrastructure and many more. She said since the school has funds for school buildings, the Provincial Government will address other concerns like roads and other learning-related needs.
“Definitely, we will support your needs from roads to libraries and water supply in your dormitories if need be. Your requests to us, clear as they are, would be fully addressed. PAC will be the best site for you,” she said.
The PSHS has about 11 campuses nationwide, with the 12th soon to rise in Mindanao next year. The campuses are seen to accommodate thousands more of students across the country.
“Certainly, we would keep you and support you in Pampanga. We will muster all our resources for programs on education. Ganito kahalaga ang edukasyon sa amin,” said the governor.
