Crime group tagged in councilman’s murder in Pampanga

ANGELES CITY, Philippines – A notorious criminal group was tagged as the suspect in the killing of a top councilor in Barangay Amsic here, police said yesterday.
Senior Supt. Rodolfo Recomono Jr., city police director, disclosed that a group engaged in robbery and gun-for-hire activities shot Kagawad Jovito Canda, while he was having a drinking spree with his friends at Purok 4 in Amsic village about 8:00 p.m. Saturday.
Recomono said Canda was responsible for the arrest of several suspects in Amsic involved in various crimes, including robbery and murder. He was instrumental in the solution of the murder of a Korean national in Mabalacat town.
Amsic Barangay Captain Gerard Costales said Canda “relentlessly” pursued criminals in their village here known as “lair of transients.”
He said the .9mm caliber pistol of Canda disappeared after he was killed.
Recomono said the two suspects armed with .45mm caliber pistols “were out to liquidate” Canda who suffered at least seven gunshot wounds, including two in the face. About nine bullet shells were found in the small alley where Canda was killed.
Recomono accompanied Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan in going to the wake of Canda at the victim’s residence in Purok 2, Amsic.
A vendor identified as Rene Gutierrez was also killed. He was drinking with Canda and a certain Rodrigo Cayanan when the two bonnet-wearing suspects shot them.
Cayanan suffered a gunshot wound at his stomach but now out of danger in an undisclosed hospital here.
Pamintuan said Canda was an “anti-crime crusader and a brave leader.”
He asked the police to “leave no stones unturned” in the solving the twin-murder.
Pamintuan also expressed his sympathy to Canda’s family, including Elizabeth, wife of the victim. He left seven children.
