New ‘progressive’ preschool opens in Pampanga

ANGELES CITY — A new academic institution that prides itself in offering “progressive” and holistic education to young preschoolers was formally opened at Villa Angelina Subdivision here on Saturday.
Bridges Preschool is a pre-elementary institution that introduces a new paradigm in education rooted in the philosophies of experiential learning, holistic education, and life-long learning.
Bridges Preschool directress Myrna Tinio said studies have consistently shown that, in order for a child to achieve his potential to the fullest, there should be multiple dimensions of a child’s growth and development.
She said the physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional attributes of a child all need to be given importance and must progress in an integrated manner.
However, many traditional schools teach children mainly academics, losing sight of the more important things like the ability to move, think and feel.
“More than being good at reading, math or science, children need to keep their passion, their spontaneity, their creativity alive. They need to be good people who care for themselves and for others,” Tinio said.
Tinio, who worked for an international school in Manila and married a Kapampangan, named the qualities of successful people present in young children – passion, creativity, willingness to take risks, among others.
She said not everyone seem to have cultivated these traits because the traditional school system has boxed individuals to be the same.
“Schools teach children to have the same manner of thinking, same way of doing, same aspirations.
They have taught looking far too forward in the future that the relevance of the present is most of the times lost,” she stressed during the official opening of Bridges Preschool.
The school advocates for the use of play to make young children learn best because it provides a concrete and non-threatening approach to try out discovery and exploration. In play, children own their learning because they have done it themselves as opposed to the usual way wherein information is simply passed onto them. When playing, children are also given chances to practice social skills, she explained.
“We believe in the significance of raising children to be morally upright global citizens. We aim to bring children to being learners beyond the four corners of the classroom and to achieve this, the school makes children enjoy learning and discovery which leads to their total development,” Tinio added.
The school has colorful and child-size classrooms where materials and toys are in shelves accessible to children. The common play area has a toy stove, sink, work bench for carpentry, and other learning materials while a resource room keeps the school’s toys and mini-library.
This set-up is ideal for children ages 1 ½ – 4 years old who are yet to develop their physical aptitude, mental readiness and social skills to be ready for more demanding academic tasks in the proceeding grade levels.
Because the school believes that an intelligent child should also be a healthy child, nutritious meals are inclusive of the fees that parents pay for the school year.
Bridges Preschool starts its first regular school year on June 13 and now accepts reservations for enrolment.
To enable children to have fun and be productive this summer, Bridges Preschool offers exciting programs like Cooking Math, Reading and Writing Adventures, Play group, Artsy Craftsy, Personality Development, Photography for Children, and Soccer.
It is also the first to bring the world-renowned Kindermusik to Pampanga through Dr. Liz Inciong, a pediatrician from St. Luke’s Medical Center.
Angeles City Councilor Edgardo “Edu” Pamintuan, a staunch advocate of education, led the ribbon cutting at the launch attended by Angeles City Mayor Ed Pamintuan, parent guests, consultants and educators from Manila, as well as local media.
Bridges Preschool is located at 118 St. Catherine Street, Villa Angelina Subdivision, Angeles City.
