Consumers eyed as wage board members

CONSUMERS are now being eyed to become members of the regional tripartite wages and productivity boards (RTWPBs).

Ciriaco Lagunzad, National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC) executive director, said consumer representation in the wage boards is necessary as they are directly affected by the minimum wage adjustments.
Aside from consumers, he said NWPC is also eyeing representatives from the Department of Agriculture (DA) and members of the academe.
He said members of the academe can provide the technical know-how on the statistical basis.

The DA, on the other hand, needs to be represented since the minimum wage rates are being set by the RTWPBs for non-agriculture workers as well as agricultural workers.

Article 122 of the Wage Rationalization Act provides that each wage board shall be composed of the Regional Director of the Department of Labor and Employment as chairman, the Regional Directors of the National Economic and Development Authority and Department of Trade and Industry as vice-chairmen and two members each from workers and employers sectors, who shall be appointed by the President of the Philippines.

The move is part of the efforts of the NWPC to expand the power of the RTWPBs in order to better address the needs of workers.

Lagunzad also said that the commission wants to enhance the RTWPBs in order to enhance promotion of productivity at work. (HDT/Sunnex)
