Defense can’t confirm veracity of dollar accounts

A LAWYER of Chief Justice Renato Corona refused to confirm if the Supreme Court official really owns dollar accounts, some which were supposedly withdrawn days after he was impeached by the House of Representatives.
During clarificatory questioning by Senator Franklin Drilon, defense lawyer Dennis Manalo said one of the 82 dollar accounts disclosed by Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales at the impeachment court remains to be a subject of testimony from witnesses they have yet to present.
“Are you insisting that these accounts, which no less than the PSBank (Philippine Savings Bank) president admitted are fictitious? If you’re saying that these accounts are fictitious, why go to the Supreme Court and ask for a restraining order?” Drilon asked Manalo.
The senator said that one of the dollar accounts detailed by Morales before the tribunal where Corona allegedly withdrew US$768,733.96 on December 15, 2011 was confirmed by the bank president himself.
During the prosecution’s presentation of evidence, PSBank president Pascual Garcia III admitted before the court that dollar accounts under the name of the chief magistrate exists.
“There are actually three accounts stated in the AMLC report which the PSBank president himself has earlier confirmed,” prosecution spokesperson and Aurora Representative Sonny Angara told reporters in a press briefing, referring to the Anti-Money Laundering Council report submitted to Ombudsman Morales detailing the dollar accounts of Corona.
Manalo said he is not in the position to answer if the alleged dollar accounts in the PSBank, which are subject of a temporary restraining order by the Supreme Court, exists or not.
The defense panel earlier told the impeachment court that Corona will personally answer the allegations against him, including the dollar accounts, under oath.
But Angara said that after all that has been revealed in the trial, it will be difficult for Corona to deny that he has dollar accounts under this name.
