Foundation gives scholarship grants

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Abad Santos Madrigal Foundation (ASMF) Inc. awarded on Monday two scholarship slots for qualified Kapampangan students.
Fritzie Hazel Lim, a representative sent by former Senator Maria Ana Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal, disclosed that the foundation decided to give the scholarship grants to provide educational opportunities for deserving Kapampangans.
Governor Lilia Pineda, together with the other elected officials, accepted the generosity of the Madrigal and Abad Santos families during the commemoration 70th death anniversary of Kapampangan martyr and patriot Jose Abad Santos held at the Capitol.
Pineda, meanwhile, clarified that Congress, by virtue of Republic Act No. 7552, enacted May 7 as a regular holiday in Pampanga to pay tribute to and honor Abad-Santos.
Abad-Santos, a native son of San Fernando, was the fifth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines and served as Acting President of the Philippines during World War II.
He was executed by the Japanese military in May 2, 1942 after he refused to pledge allegiance to the Japanese government during their invasion of the Philippines in the early 40s. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
