Lawmakers award farmers, cooperatives

STA. ANA — Third District Representative Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. and Butil Farmers Party Representative Agapito Guanlao led the awarding over the weekend of some four farmer achievers, three farmer cooperatives and two agri-entrepreneurs during the recent Farmers Congress.
The awarding is part of the initiative of the Municipal Government in recognizing the achievements of farmers in helping uplift the standard of living of their respective families and their contribution to the community’s development and progress.
The awardees were farmers Roque Vercasion (San Agustin), Perfecto David (San Pablo), Amelito Miranda (San Pablo) and Mario Mallari (Sto. Rosario). The farmers were selected based on the years they have devoted to farming along with their various achievements in commercial farming.
Also given awards in the event was the Guran Sapa Multi-Purpose Cooperative which was adjudged as Outstanding Cooperative for this year.
Centro Mauli Service Irrigator’s Association was named Outstanding Irrigator’s Association, while the Sta. Ana Public Elementary School Multi-Purpose Cooperative was also named Outstanding Cooperative for 2012.
Meanwhile, Manuel Calderon was named as this year’s Department of Agriculture Awardee along with Rodolfo Buan who was recognized as Outstanding Agri-Entrepreneur.
Gonzales said the awards will further inspire farmers and cooperatives here to do better with their work and help in the development and progress of their respective barangays.
His office, he said, is continuously providing assistance to farmers and their families.
There are also institutionalize programs like fund subsidies for cooperatives and fund assistance for agri-entrepreneurs, he said.
“Farmer groups and cooperatives can coordinate with our office so that we can identify programs that would best fit their needs,” Gonzales said.
Guanlao, for his part, said the farmers and cooperatives should maintain close coordination with government line agencies for assistances and available programs.
He said Butil is facilitating such programs and is also giving fund assistances to farmers.
Butil is also giving medical and financial assistances to farmers and their families aside from scholarships given to children of farmers and indigents. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
