Balas artworks: More than just sand

ANGELES CITY — The Municipal Government of Porac led the opening of a week-long exhibit over the weekend that highlights artworks inspired and made from sand (balas), the town’s major revenue generating revenue resource.
Vice Mayor Dexter David told Sun.Star Pampanga that the artworks were made by local artists of Porac town who participated in the recent Balas Festival.
During the festivities, the artists presented their works made from sand and other indigenous materials.
“We would like to present to people the importance of sand in the life of our people and the resiliency that we have shown during the Mt. Pinatubo disaster and how this sand resource had helped us to rise again. All these are well presented in the sand art at the SM City Clark exhibit,” David said.
The exhibit includes artworks of mix-media artist Herminigildo Pineda, featuring episodes of the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo and scenes from the town’s quarry industry.
David said the exhibit is an extended activity of the town’s Balas Festival. The festival aims to re-brand the town’s sand industry as a tourism attraction along with eco-tourism attractions of the town.
The event, according to David, is set to become a yearly activity that will not just market the rich sand deposits here as a tourism attraction but also project the town as an eco-tourism destination.
David told Sun.Star Pampanga that the festival also aims to draw attention to the rich sand deposits here that have become easy locations for filmmakers, as well as the other tourism destinations like Miyamit Falls and Porac Highlands.
