Endangered Turtle Found In Agusan

BUNAWAN, Agusan del Sur – After “Lolong,” acknowledged as the world’s largest captured crocodile, comes the capture of another endangered animal Wednesday – the Soft-Shelled Turtle locally known as “Danata” or “Danta” or “Pawikan.”
The turtle was accidentally caught by the fishing net of a Manobo fisherman on Monday along in Mihaba Lake in the Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary of Bunawan town, Agusan del Sur.
Measuring almost 15 inches wide and 20 inches long, the male “Danata has a companion with almost the size of a table, or three feet in length and another three feet in width, according to the fisherman, who identified himself as Aljun Dilag.
“Paspas kaayo molangoy kini nga Danata padulong sa ilawom sa tubig” (This Danata dives so fast to the depth of the lake),” said Dilag in the vernacular.
The “Danata” is oblong in shape and is somewhat soft-shelled on the part of the main body. The shell is somewhat brown in color with pinkish to whitish abdominal color. It has four legs with sharp claws.
This juvenile Cantor’s giant softshell turtle (Pelochelys cantorii) or Asian giant softshell turtle is a species of fresh water turtle. Pelochelys cantorii or Cantor’s giant softshell turtle is an endangered species locally threatened, according to local authorities.
