4th district records 9 suicides in 3 months

MASANTOL — At least nine suicide incidents have been recorded in two towns of the province’s fourth district within a period of three months.
Alice Manalastas, barangay health worker (BHW) president here, told Sun.Star Pampanga on Tuesday that they have recorded six suicide incidents in their town. These happened in Barangays Sagrada, San Nicolas, Batasan and Bebe Anac from the month of May to July 6 this year.
“‘Yung isa, 78 years old na na-diagnose yata na may tuberculosis. Hindi daw siya magkatulog nang malaman niyang mayroon siyang TB. Kaya ayun, nag suicide,” Manalastas said.
“‘Yung isa naman, bata pa. Nagastos lang niya ang pera ng paluwagan at nang hindi niya ito mabayaran ay nagpakamatay din,” Manalastas added.
She said the suicide incidents were committed through “bigti” and intake of sodium, muriatic acid and Clorox.
The BHW president requested Sun.Star Pampanga to withhold the names of the victims to protect the bereaved families.
In Candaba town, two suicides were recorded this month involving a high school graduate and a housewife.
The student was a resident of Barangay San Agustin, while the housewife was from Salapungan.
The student-victim wanted to pursue his college education, but his brother reportedly informed him that he cannot go to school because of financial constraints.
Manalastas said that in most cases, suicide was committed because of extreme poverty.
The fourth district is the poorest district in the province.
