Aquino cousin fit to become senator: Palace

MANILA — Malacañang has no doubt on the qualification of Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, cousin of President Benigno Aquino III, to become senator.

Bam announced on Sunday his plan to run as senator in next year’s elections, saying that his move has the President’s “blessing.”

“Certainly, he is fit to be (a senator). He has his educational background to prove that he is capable. He is an awardee and he is a very active civic leader. Certainly he would be a welcome addition to the Senate,” Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a press briefing in Malacañang on Monday.

Lacierda, however, refused to confirm if Bam’s plan has the President’s approval.

The Palace spokesman added that he is not in a position to comment on matters regarding the Liberal Party (LP) deferring it to its members.

Bam said he has yet to decide whether to join LP or run as an independent candidate.

Transportation Secretary Manuel Roxas II, LP president, said the ruling party is considering to include Bam in its senatorial slate citing his “good track record as youth leader.”

Bam headed the National Youth Commission during the time of former President Gloria-Macapagal-Arroyo.

He is president of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (Tayo).

He was chosen as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines (TOYM) for 2010 in the category of Social Enterprise and Community Development.

Bam is the son of Paul Aquino, the youngest brother of the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., and nephew of former senators Agapito “Butz” Aquino and Tessie Aquino-Oreta.
