Cops seize P1-M shabu, nab ‘courier’

APALIT – Joint elements of the Philippine National Police, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and Bureau of Customs (BOC) arrested on Tuesday a 52-year-old man in Barangay San Vicente here who had some P1 million worth of shabu in his possession.
In his report to Senior Superintendent Edgar Tinio, Pampanga Police provincial director, Superintendent Homer Penecilla, Apalit police chief, identified the suspect as Rolando Bonifacio Sunga, a resident of Barangay Sta. Lucia, Masantol town.

Penecilla said prior to the arrest of Sunga, the BOC intercepted a shipment from San Francisco, USA consigned to the suspect with address at 893 Famtanga, San Vicente, Apalit, Pampanga.
He said the “package” arrived at the U-Freight/Cargohaus at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on July 9 (2012) and was declared as wedding accessories.
However during the regular examination conducted by Custom examiners, the “package” allegedly turned out to be methamphetamine hydrochloride or “shabu”.
Customs director General George Alino (Retired) instructed agent Sherwin Andrada to conduct a controlled delivery of the parcel with the assistance of PDEA agents and Apalit Police to the said address of the suspect.
Penecilla said Sunga was arrested when he was about to retrieve the “package”. The officers took the suspect to the Apalit police station for investigation and filing of charges.
The arrest was witnessed by barangay officials, media and representative of the Pampanga Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.
Police said the suspected shabu was taken to the PDEA laboratory for examination while appropriate charges were filed against Sunga for violation of the Tariff and Customs Code and Dangerous Drugs Act.
Meanwhile, Mayor Oscar Tetangco Jr. commended Penecilla and other law enforcers for the arrest of the suspect, saying the local government unit here has always been in the forefront in the fight against illegal drugs.
“Basta dito sa Apalit, ayaw namin sa mga adik. Sa umpisa pa lang ng aking term bilang Mayor ay inatasan na natin ang kapulisan at mga barangay tanods natin na labanan ang droga, kaya naman marami na tayong nahuli,pinakulong at pina rehabilitate dahil sa ng ilegal drugs na yan,” Tetangco said.

Tetangco added that all the 12 barangays in this first-class municipality have been considered “drug-free”, adding that the LGU will exercise all legal means to assure Apaliteños that drug pushers and users have no place in this town. (Chris Navarro)
