Rains still expected due to southwest monsoon

MANILA — The weather bureau said on Friday the western part of the country can expect rains from a “weak” southwest monsoon.
Weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said a weak southwest monsoon affecting the country will still bring scattered rainshowers in the Friday afternoon or evening.
Aurelio said no weather disturbance has been monitored near the Philippine Area of Responsibility thus, good weather is expected over the weekend.
In its advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the western section of Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms.
The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.
Light to moderate winds blowing from the southwest to south will prevail over Luzon and coming from southeast to south over the rest of the country. Coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be slight to moderate.
Meanwhile, Gine Nievares, Pagasa hydrologist said despite of weather improvement in the metropolis, the La Mesa dam in Quezon City is still on red alert status.
Nievares said the water level in La Mesa as of 6 a.m. Friday was 79.72 meters, near the spilling level of 80.15 meters.
La Mesa dam does not have a gate unlike bigger dams. Excess water in La Mesa merely spills into its floodway and flows to the Tullahan River.
She warned residents near the Tullahan River in Fairview in Quezon City, and the cities of Malabon and Valenzuela, of possible heavy flooding once La Mesa dam overflows.
Nievares said they will only downgrade the alert status of the dam when its water level reaches 79.50 meters or below.
La Mesa dam was placed on red alert status since Tuesday due to intermittent rains.
For his part, Dr. Noel Lansang, chief of the disaster control division of Quezon City’s Department of Public Order and Safety, said that they are not taking any chances even if the weather has started to improve.
With the unpredictable weather condition, Lansang said nine rescue boats and 30 personnel of the city’s rescue teams remained on stand-by at various areas near Barangays Fairview, North Fairview, Greater Lagro, San Bartolome, Santa Monica, Novaliches Proper, Santa Lucia, Gulod and Nagkaisiang Nayon in case the dam reaches its spilling level.
He added that the City Government is prepared to conduct rescue operations such as evacuation in areas that may be affected. (PNA/Sunnex)
