Road works claim ‘casualties’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A 40-foot container van turned upside-down early morning Thursday after encountering knee-deep potholes in the east-bound lane of the Jose Abad Santos Avenue (Jasa).

The construction of the Lazatin Flyover and road widening works in Jasa is being fast tracked after government officials set the completion deadline on August 18 this year.

A dump truck, a rice hauler, and a passenger van also got stuck in the deep potholes of the detour road earlier, causing massive traffic along the west bound lane of Jasa, Lazatin Boulevard, Palawe, and even MacArthur Highway.
Traffic enforcers were forced to shut down the heavily muddied east lane for four hours as workers scramble to remove the container van and conduct “remedial measures.”

It took a prominent Jasa trader to call the attention of the Department of Public Works and Highways and request for a crane to remove the stalled container van.

The driver of the container truck who asked not to be named said he and his assistant were slowly navigating Jasa on their way back to Manila from Subic when its wheels fell into the potholes, loosening the locks of the container van and the truck to lean on its left side.

The container van fell upside down in the middle of an excavation.

“Mga 5:30 a.m. po ng bigla na lang kaming tumagilid at tumaob nga iyung container van. Buti na lang po wala ng laman itong container at walang tinamaan na tao o ibang sasakyan,” he told Sun.Star Pampanga, adding it was fortunate they have unloaded their cargo of bulk ship parts at Subic Freeport. The container van was safely locked back to the truck around 9:45 a.m.

The Jasa trader said, “…this is what we have been raising all along. Definitely, these are construction-related effects. We would not want any more of these on top of our dying businesses.
