Aquino to lead Heroes’ Day rites

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III will lead the flag-raising and wreath laying ceremonies for the commemoration of the National Heroes’ Day on Monday, a public holiday.
Set at 7:30 a.m. at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City, Aquino will also deliver the keynote address anchored to this year’s theme: “Pilipinong Tapat, Magiting at Makabayan: Ikaw ang Bayani sa Tuwid na Daan.”
According to the programme, the Armed Forces of the Philippines Chaplain Colonel Eustacio Galindo will lead the invocation, Taguig City Mayor Maria Laarni Cayetano for the welcome remarks, and National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) Chairman Maria Serena Diokno will give a message.
After this, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin will introduce the President.
Prior to his untimely death on August 18, Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo called on local chief executives to conduct simple yet meaningful activities honoring the country’s national heroes.
With this, passport processing at the Department of Foreign Affairs and the operations of the United States Embassy will only resume on Tuesday in observance of the holiday.
Celebrated every last Monday of August as provided by Republic Act 9492, the National Heroes’ Day will commemorate the beginning of the cry of Pugad Lawin, the fight for the country’s liberation from Spain by Filipino revolutionaries led by Andres Bonifacio.
Last year, Aquino thanked soldiers and World War II veterans by setting examples of bravery and public service.
