Liberal Party stalwart won’t pursue Senate bid

HOUSE Deputy Speaker and Quezon Representative Lorenzo Tañada III said Thursday that he will no longer run for Senate even as an independent candidate after he was dropped by the Liberal Party (LP) from its slate.
“After serious reflection and consultation with my family, friends and supporters, I have decided not to pursue my Senate bid even as an independent candidate,” he said.
In a statement, Tañada said United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) of former President Joseph Estrada and Vice President Jejomar Binay and the Makabayan Coalition composed of progressive party-list groups offered him to run under their ticket but he declined both offers.
“As a true believer that we must persist in having consistent political parties as part of our national building effort and as an advocate for political party and campaign reform, I had respectfully declined their invitation,” he said.
Tañada has not been reached for comment since President Benigno Aquino III officially proclaimed the administration’s candidates for the 2013 senatorial elections.
The LP-led coalition had been criticized for fielding only three of its members, two of which only took their oath last week, in its slate. They are former Senators Jamby Madrigal and Jun Magsaysay, and presidential cousin Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino.
The rest of the candidates are fielded by the Nacionalista Party, Nationalist People’s Coalition, Laban ng Demokrating Pilipino, and the Akbayan party.
Tañada, a three-term legislator, has been with the LP since 1993. He is also the ruling party’s spokesperson.
Tañada also thanked his supporters in Quezon, relatives, friends, and colleagues in the House of Representatives who publicly endorsed his bid.
“I regard your support as an affirmation of our enduring partnership in advocating people’s issues and our country’s interests. Our struggles were never easy, but I always found strength in our perseverance, friendship and solidarity,” he said.
