Akbayan to PNoy: Wrong move in Subic Bay

Subic Bay — A close political ally chided President Noynoy Aquino for his government’s hand off policy in investigating allegations that a Malaysian firm contracted by the US Navy dumped “toxic or hazardous waste close to the coast of Subic Bay.”
Instead, what we have is a kind of debate in the media whether or not the wastes are toxic, whether or not dumping had taken place (in Subic Bay),” Bello told reporters.
He added that Malacanang should not have “taken sort of a hands off attitude.”
Recently, a Malaysian firm, Glenn Defense Marine Asia, was accused of dumping the toxic wastes it collected from the USS Emory Land in Subic Bay. The firm has since denied the allegation.
Not toxic waste, not in Subic Bay
The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) conducted an investigation and said that there was no evidence that the private contractor of the United States Navy released nuclear, chemical or similar hazardous waste within the confines of Subic Bay.
“Neither is there evidence that oily wastes or sewage wastes have been dumped in our waters. Latest tests show that Subic Bay’s waters remain clean, safe, and continue to be within normal levels,” SBMA chairman Robert Garcia said.
Local cause-oriented groups, who joined the press conference, said that they were worried about the amount of pollution in Subic Bay.
Jen Valermino, spokesperson for a group called Subic Bay Freeport Chamber for Health & Environment Conservation (sbfCHEC) said that a study conducted recently showed that there is a “critical increase in the mercury” and other
chemical in the bay.

When asked whom the call not to sanitize the news was directed at, Velarmino replied in a text message, “all agencies involved in investigations of environmentally critical projects.”
Bello said that his party already filed a resolution for the house of representatives to investigate the matter.
“There is a mentality that because this activities and entities are covered by the (Visiting Force Agreement) that there would be certain looseness with which they (US Navy and Glenn Defense) follow Philippine environmental laws,” Bello explained.
The Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) is an agreement between the Philippines and the United States that allows US military forces to visit the country. This is the basis for the regular port calls made by warships of the US Navy in Subic Bay.
The Akbayan representative also said that they, as well as Senator Merian Defensor Santiago, will file a resolution to end the VFA “as it has never served the interest of the country.”
“And because it is a joint a resolution, Malacanang will have to act on it (and) respond to this joint senate and house resolution,” Bello said. (30)
