NGCP out to provide steady power supply in 2013 polls

MEXICO, Pampanga–The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) will implement measures that would ensure steady power supply during next year’s mid-term elections.
NGCP spokesperson Cynthia Alabanza said plans are now underway to avoid any transmission-related outages during election day.
With sufficient reserves, Alabanza is optimistic they could duplicate their record of uninterrupted power in 2010.
“We will try our best. So that at least on the part of the energy sector controlled by the NGCP, there will be no problem,” she said.
She said the NGCP will step-up its maintenance check to all its transmission facilities and equipment before the coming election period to prevent any problem in the transmission system.
The NGCP also disclosed that it will undertake aggressive metering services expansion starting 2013.
Alabanza said that while the company engages in power and system delivery, metering services is a lesser known function of the NGCP.
The expansion of the NGCP metering services, she said, is consistent with the company’s transition towards the eventual adoption of the Smart Grid here in the country which will allow them not only to record customers’ energy consumption, but also to communicate this data to facilitate automated and remote meter reading, remote connection and disconnection of the energy supply to the end user and close monitoring of the energy supply.
“This will allow big power users to choose their own power supplier and be directly connected to their contracted power generator,” Alabanza said.
The spokesperson clarified that NGCP is a privately corporation that holds a 25-year concession for operating, maintaining and developing the country’s power grid as it transmits high-voltage electricity from power plants to distribution utilities through its interconnected cables and towers, substation and related assets.
She said the NGCP acquired the concession right for $ 4 billion with 25 percent paid in advance plus concession fee for a regular period. ● (PNA)
