LGUs reminded to strictly enforce Kasambahay Law

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) regional office has enjoined all local government units (LGUs) in Central Luzon to strictly observe and implement the provisions of the Kasambahay Law.

Glenn P. Cosio, local government operations officer IV, cited the important role of the LGUs, specifically the barangay chairmen who will take the lead in the conduct of the registration of the kasambahay in their respective jurisdiction.

Cosio said that barangay officials should require every employer to register domestic workers under his/her employment in kasambahay masterlist or the registry of domestic workers.

He said that the start-up registration of domestic workers in this city will be held on July 28, this year.
He also said that barangay officials will serve as witnesses between the household employer and the employee in the signing of the written employment contract which shall be executed before the commencement of the service.

He said the household employer shall have the obligation to furnish a copy of the employment contract to the kasambahay and a copy to the Office of the Punong Barangay in the barangay where the employer resides.

“We are encouraging everyone to support the Kasambahay Law. The domestic workers must be treated as a family member considering their services and concern accorded to every family they serve,” he said.

Under the Kasambahay Law, the domestic worker is entitled to a monthly minimum wage of at least P2,500 if they are employed in Metro Manila, P2,000 in other cities and first-class municipalities, and P1,500 elsewhere in the country.

Aside from the monthly minimum wage, the other mandatory benefits of the kasambahay under the new law include five days annual service incentive leave with pay, 13th month pay and daily rest period of eight hours.

After one month from employment, the Kasambahay shall be covered by the Social Security System (SSS), Employees Compensation Commission (ECC), Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), and Pag-IBIG. ● (PNA)
