Senator backs Clark premier airport bid

APALIT, Pampanga–Senator Cynthia Villar has vowed to support the full development of the Clark International Airport (CIA) in Pampanga as the country’s “new international airport.”

Villar, who was recently interviewed at the residence of Mayor Oscar “Jun” Tetangco here, said the CIA “is the best airport” due to its amenities and proximity to Metro Manila. The CIA is at the Clark Freeport, which is about 84 kilometres north of Manila.

Villar stressed that the decongestion of flights and passengers at the three terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Metro Manila “is the prime reason why we must develop the Clark airport.”

But Villar stressed that it should be the Pampanga officials who should give her the ideas and proposals on how to make the CIA the new the international airport of the country.

In an interview, Department of Tourism (DOT) Central Luzon director Ronnie Tiotuico lauded Villar for her support of turning the CIA into a premiere gateway.

“The more than 23 million residents of North and Central Luzon are banking on the success of the Clark airport to boost tourism and businesses in both areas,” said Tiotuico.

He said that “more local and international tourists landing at Clark means more jobs and income.”
Earlier, business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan said the CIA, which is preparing for the start of the Emirates’ daily Clark-Dubai flights in October, should be the “new international airport.”

Pangilinan said “it’s up to the government” on how it will offer the development of the CIA.”
Pangilinan, who traces his roots to Apalit, Pampanga, openly supported and endorsed for the past three years the transformation of the CIA into the country’s premier international airport. He earlier blamed passenger and aircraft congestions as causes of delay of flights at the Naia terminals 1, 2 and 3, thus necessitating the development of CIA.

Passenger volume at the CIA jumped in the first quarter of the year by at least 62 percent compared to the same period in 2012. There were 408,895 passengers from January to March in 2013, while there were 252,163 passengers in the same period last year.
The CIA hosted some P1.4 million passengers in 2012.

The CIA, which is preparing to host more than two million passengers in 2013, has two 3,200-runways built by the former US military stationed in Clark. The largest and heaviest planes ever built landed at the CIA to host its reliability.
