DOH assures assistance to ‘Maring’ flood victims

STO. TOMAS, Pampanga –The Department of Health (DOH) has assured Gov. Lilia Pineda that it will support all-out the flood victims in Pampanga, including evacuees in two hard-hit towns.

DOH Assistant Secretary Dr. Eric Tayag, who represented DOH Sec. Enrique Ona, visited Calumpit, Bulacan and Macabebe and Sto. Tomas towns in Pampanga on Saturday to check on actual situation of evacuees.

“We can’t just rely on reports. We have to see it so that we can ensure that their living condition is alright and no diseases will spread,” said Tayag, who was joined by DOH assistant secretary Dr. Jerry Bayugo in the visit to Pampanga.

Gov. Lilia Pineda welcomed the DOH officials and thanked Ona for ensuring support as at least 100 barangays in the province remained flooded as of Sunday.

Pineda and Ona spoke over the phone and the provincial government was promised of “steady supply of what it needs,” it was learned.
The DOH on Saturday deployed its P12-million mobile clinic to ensure the proper treatment of evacuees and avoid the spread of communicable diseases in evacuation centers.

Dr. Huberto Lapuz, head of the mobile bus equipped with laboratory, electrocardiograph (ECG), blood chemistry and x-ray machines, said he and at least 35 other personnel, including 10 doctors, could treat as much as 600 patients in one day. He is the director of the Dr. Paulino Garcia Memorial Research and Memorial Medical Center in Cabanatuan City.

Lapuz said the mobile clinic would allow them to “treat the patients better, faster and diagnosis will be reliable and accurate.”
Gov. Pineda and Vice Gov. Dennis Pineda joined the medical mission in Sto.Tomas and they distributed relief goods to at least 668 affected families in the said town.

Vice Gov. Pineda thanked the DOH “for their utmost concern to the welfare of our people, especially flood victims.”
He said they are planning to purchase a mobile bus similar to the DOH. The provincial government has prioritized health care service.
At least 40,000 people remained affected in Macabebe and more than 7,000 of whom are in at least 25 evacuation centers, said Mayor Annette Flores-Balgan.

DOH regional director, Dr. Leonita Gorgolon disclosed that they distributed P150,000 worth of medicines in Sto. Tomas. She said they had prepared for the effects of perennial floods in Pampanga and the six other provinces of Central Luzon as early as July.

Gorgolon said “the next few days, or a week, are crucial because we will already know if an epidemic has spread in an evacuation center.”
Globe sponsored a “lugao feeding” in Sto. Tomas, benefitting some 700 people, mostly children.

Lapuz’s team and the mobile clinic, donated by China two years ago, had just been used to treat some 600 seriously injured residents of Casiguran, Baler and nearby town in Aurora province. They were victims of the recent Typhoon Labuyo.
