Village holds tourism summit to address local problems

ANGELES CITY — Stakeholders and local officials gathered Monday at the Barangay Balibago Hall for the first-ever barangay tourism summit in a bid to device ways to address problems and uplift the condition of the tourism industry here.
According to barangay chairman Rodelio “Tony” Mamac, the event was aimed at joining the efforts of various businessmen and stakeholders to convert the “sin city” image of the Balibago tourism belt area into a “wholesome entertainment and investment center.”
The forum was attended by Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Director Ronaldo Tiotuico, Rosemarie Herera, president of the Sulong sa Ikauunlad ng Gitnang Luzon, Aksyon Na (Sigla) and Jim Dale, vice president of the Hotel and Restaurant Association in Angeles City.
Dale, during the meeting, said there is a lot to improve in the Balibago area in terms of peace and order and business policy, saying “the greatest challenge we have here is how we can change the perception of people on the business area here.”
He said the decrease in the number of tourists visiting the city is not due to bad perception but on things happening abroad.
“The tourism industry here is affected by the global crisis and not by the things happening here in Angeles City. But if we make the tourism industry here more well-rounded that it can appeal to tourists of all ages, we could have more of them coming in,” Dale said.
Mamac said another area for improvement that they have identified is the lack of a sufficient urban development infrastructure to cope with the rapid urbanization and increasing socio-economic ills brought about by industrialization.
“Media exposé on a certain ‘Jojo Group’ engaging in illegal acts, intimidation, harassment and extortion practices on bar women have done too little to uplift the image of the Balibago tourism area. We want to change this through the help of the local business sector, stakeholders and city government,” Mamac said.
Mamac said they are now formulating tangible plans of action to address the various issues raised during the summit.
Mamac said that local efforts have also been stepped up to increase local security in the area.
Herrera said the other forms of wholesome entertainment should be encouraged in the Balibago area to make it more attractive to tourists.
“The perception is when they say Balibago, the first thing that comes to mind is prostitution. But it should not be that way. Good clean entertainment should be the selling point of an area,” Herrera said.
Mamac said they are working double time to implement the plan to address the issues the soonest possible time. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
