LGUs urged to spend more for firefighters

SENATE Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano has called on local government units (LGUs) to set aside more funds for firefighters given the higher risk of fires during the summer months.
Cayetano said there is an urgent need “to fortify local fire fighting units with equipment support is urgent because the likelihood of an increase in the incidence of fires is looming in the horizon now that Pagasa (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) has declared that summer has officially started.”
According to 2011 data from the Bureau of Fire Protection, there are 900 fires throughout the country in March last year. This jumped to 1,256 fires in April last year. The National Capital Region had the most fires from March to June last year at 1,499. Central Visayas had just 176 fires during the same period.
Cayetano said that with firefighters now also trained to take care of victims of vehicular accidents and to participate in rescue and retrieval operations during calamities, they should be given more government resources.
“When people are properly compensated and their concerns addressed, they will be more productive and effective in doing their work. In this profession, we need motivated men. So we need to do our part of taking care of their needs if we expect them to take care of us in return,” he said. (Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)
