Macapagal sees Corona ouster
Fil-Am Corporate Executive Michael Ted Macapagal has predicted the ouster of Chief Justice Renato Corona. In an interview, the 41-year old businessman said the senator-judges, if they know what’s good for them, would return a guilty verdict. He noted that in the mind of the public Corona and former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo are one and the same, and both evoke the same feeling of revulsion.
GMA is CJ Corona’s unindicted co-conspirator, Macapagal said. In fact, she is the principal in the scheme to frustrate the ends of justice.
According to Macapagal, the overwhelming majority of the people elected Noynoy Aquino precisely to hold Mrs. Arroyo to account. He said the people believe Corona was appointed to the Supreme Court, first as associate justice and then as chief justice, for one purpose only, and that is to protect the former president.
If the Senators acquit Corona, he warned, GMA walks. The people, Macapagal added, will not tolerate that. He added they will protest a no-guilty verdict, and they will vent their ire on the senators responsible. In the months leading up to the last presidential election, Macapagal joined the likes of Loida Nicolas Lewis, Vicky Garchitorena, Rodel Rodis, Greg Macabenta, and other Filipino businessmen and professionals in the U.S. in an effort to raise funds for the Noy-Mar ticket. His exploits attracted the attention of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. A month before the election, the popular daily ran an article about him under the title “This Stateside Macapagal is Campaigning for Aquino” on the front page.
Until he left for the U.S., where he did business for the last 20 years, Macapagal was a resident of Olongapo City. His father, the late human rights lawyer Teddy C. Macapagal, was a Cory Aquino loyalist. He was among the first to rally behind the widow when she decided to contest the presidency in the so-called SNAP election.
President Cory appointed the older Macapagal Mayor-OIC of Olongapo City.
The Macapagals are related to GMA.
