Anti coal plant fun run set in Olongapo

OLONGAPO City: Anti coal plant advocates joined hands in hosting a fun run dubbed as Sikad Subic to widen their campaign against the setting-up of coal-fired power plants here.
“Inaanyayahan po naming ang lahat na sumama sa SIKAD SUBIC. Bata man o matanda, mahalaga ang suporta ng bawat isa sa layunin nating isalba ang Subic Bay sa pinaplanong coal-fired power plant,” said El Latinazo, vice-chairman of YNEA’s executive board and chairman of the SIKAD Subic’s Secretariat.
YNEA together with PREDA, AKBAYAN, YMCA, and OCCMA held a peaceful rally in August last year expressing opposition to the planned construction of coal-fired power plant along Redondo Peninsula in Subic Bay.
The group was behind the August 29 rally which manage to draw in 3,500 protesters in short notice, the rally forced Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority to conduct its own social acceptability process for the proposed cola plant inside Subic bay Freeport.
Sikad Subic will start from the East Tapinac Oval Track at 5:30 am on January 29 and will trail a three- and five-kilometer route passing through the main roads of Olongapo City before returning to the starting point.
At the oval, YNEA will hold a mini musical program, poster and mural painting contests and photography exhibition to better inform participants about the possible harmful effects of a coal-fired power plant to the populace and vicinities around Subic Bay.
Proceeds of the fun run will be used to fund a wide-spread information campaign regarding environmental protection and sustainable development.
