Pampanga observes Earth Hour
OFFICIALS in various parts of Pampanga participated in the observance of the Earth Hour, an international environmental awareness campaign against global warming that started in Australia in 2007.
In Angeles City and nearby Mabalacat town, officials gathered at the SM City Clark for the annual observance.
Both Mayors Marino “Boking” Morales of Mabalacat and Edgardo Pamintuan of Angeles City urged the people to participate and support this yearly event, aimed at arresting the so-called climate change brought about by pollution.
Morales said Earth Hour is a simple act of putting off lights for about an hour in order to save energy and make a firm resolve to counteract global warming.
“We can do more for our Mother Earth, starting in our own home and backyard. Because of the mounting garbage problem, we need to find ways to effectively dispose it without damaging any surface of the earth,” Morales said.
Pamintuan, for his part, stressed that everyone should contribute in saving the environment from further destruction.
The city mayor said it was his third time to join the worthwhile event at SM City Clark. He thanked mall officials for their invitation and support to the City Government.
Lawyer Apolonio B. Anota Jr., director of the Nayong Pilipino Foundation, said they are now planting more trees inside the Nayong Pilipino Clark as part of their environmental protection program.
Other officials who graced the event were Bishop Jose Magat Briones of the Angeles City Task Force 1 Million Trees, Holy Rosary Parish Pastoral Council Benedicto Tiotuico, Angeles City Jesus “Jay” Sangil, and others.
Meanwhile, the Earth Hour observance at SM City Pampanga was graced by fourth district Board Member Ric Yabut, Ms Philippines Eco-Tourism 2010 Angela Lauren Fernando, Subic Bay Photography Co-founder Roy Van Morales, Subic Bay Photography Member Cleo Nodado, SM City Pampanga Mall Manager Lana Erroba, SM City Pampanga Asst Mall Managers John Lo and Harvey Quiwa.
Mall tenants switched off 50 percent of their lights, while the mall switched off 100 percent of their lights at the façade, including SM logos.
Hanzley Ignacio, a 10-year-old girl, delivered a speech on what environmentalism is in the eyes of a child and on what she can do in her own little ways to save Mother Earth because it is their future which is at stake.
After the switching off of lights, a glow-in-the-dark centerpiece was unveiled — the 60+ symbol carved out of lahar rock.
While Ignacio sang “Heal the World”, VIPs, SM executives, tenants, affiliates and shoppers joined in the ceremonial lighting of candles shaped like the SM logo.
In Camp Olivas in the City of San Fernando, the Police Regional Office-Central Luzon, under the leadership of Chief Superintendent Edgardo Ladao, also joined the nation in the observance of Earth Hour.
This, Ladao said, is in support to the pro-active advocacy of the Department of Energy and Worldwide Fund for Nature to take action against global warming.
Ladao instructed all PRO-Central Luzon personnel to switch off non-essential lights at offices/units and households inside the Camp for one hour, and switch off of signages and/or non-essential lights and appliances in all facilities within PRO control.
Also, massive dissemination among all police members and the community to participate in the Earth Hour was carried out through the Philippine National Police website.
