Security alert in Pampanga up during Holy Week

MANILA, Philippines – The provincial government of Pampanga has ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to assure a peaceful week-long observant of the Holy Week.
Thousands of tourists — local and foreign — flock to the province during the Holy Week to witness the live crucifixion, which is done by devotees to reenact the suffering of Jesus Christ.
The actual crucifixion is held in Barangay San Pedro Cutud in the city San Fernando.
Senior Superintendent Edgardo Tinio, police provincial director, said he has instructed police chiefs to ask for the assistance of force multipliers such as barangay tanods, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like Guardians, Civicom, and Kabalikat, in securing highly populated areas this Lenten Season.
Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda urged security heads of commercial establishments, including SM Pampanga and Robinsons Starmills, to deploy additional security personnel in preparation for the large volume of mall goers and tourists expected to visit the province this Holy Week.
At least 30,000 tourists flock to the province during the Lenten season, based on previous records by the local tourism department.
The Motorist Assistance Centers (MAC) and Public Assistance Centers (PAC) have already been put in place throughout the province with ambulances and fire trucks.
The posts are manned by police officers in shifting schedules to ensure that people in need of help will be immediately accommodated.
Pineda, meanwhile, reminded the police to remain on alert against criminals who may take advantage of the Lenten break.
