Cash-for-Work program benefits 190 Angeleños

ANGELES CITY — A total of 190 individuals received their monetary compensation Thursday during the city’s release of funds in line with the implementation of the Cash-for-Work Program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
The program initially seeks to provide financial assistance to victims of calamities in exchange of community works through its local counterpart, the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).
Heide Patio, CSWDO head officer, said the recipients came from barangays Malabanias and Sapalibutad with 140 and 50 beneficiaries, respectively.
“The beneficiaries rendered community work and service to the city last December 2011. They engaged in the de-clogging of drainage canals and clearing operations on waterways in their respective communities with a daily rate of P248,” Patio said.
She said that as a social welfare and development arm of the government, the DSWD is mandated to provide assistance to local government units (LGUs) and other members of society in effectively implementing programs, projects and services that will alleviate poverty and empower disadvantaged individuals, families and communities for an improved life.
Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan initiated the distribution of the sum of P2,480 for each beneficiary as compensation to their 10 days of emergency work.
Pamintuan said the Cash-for-Work is anchored in a three-fold task: (1) To ensure environmental sustainability through cleaning operations, (2) To intensify the disaster mitigation program of the city by de-clogging of flood-causing canals, and (3) To provide financial assistance to the indigent residents through the cash incentives.
“The de-clogging and clearing works are timely especially that the rainy season is fast approaching. Likewise, the amount that our beneficiaries will receive would be great help to our needy constituents,” the mayor added.
The beneficiaries have extended their gratitude for the immediate release of the monetary incentives.
“This program is a big help to us poor citizens of the city. This money will enable us to get by our household, health, and financial needs,” said one of the beneficiaries.
The Cash-for-Work program is a flagship project of the DSWD aiming to provide families badly affected by calamities and those residing on disaster prone areas throughout the Philippines, with financial assistance funded by the regional office. (RGN)
