Immigration officers hit for ‘maltreatment’

CLARK FREEPORT — The president of the Clark Investors and Locators Association (Cila) assailed some officers of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Clark for allegedly “maltreating” his girlfriend who was prevented from flying to Hong Kong.
Cila president Jeff Pradhan and his girlfriend Marites Rosales were supposed to fly to Hong Kong on April 26 when immigration officers prevented the latter from leaving the country.
In a letter to Mabalacat tourism officer Guy Hilbero, Pradhan is urging the town’s Tourism Office and Mayor Marino Morales to investigate the incident.
According to Pradhan, Rosales was subjected to secondary inspection and was made to accomplish a Border Control Questionnaire by the BI officers, but she was still not allowed to travel.
He said BI officers accused him of being “arrogant” after he asked one of the immigration officers, identified as Omar Yunus, why he was asking Rosales rather personal questions.
“He asked Marites, ‘How many days have you been with your boyfriend? Do you live together? How long have you been living together? Where did you meet? And how many times have the two of you travelled together?” Pradhan said.
“Mr. Yunus replied that this was standard operating procedure. I said that I understand but was only asking because I am the President of the Clark Investors Locators Association and that I was inquiring as to their policies in regards to complaints from members and locators who have had issues with the Immigration process here at Clark Airport,” Pradhan said.
Another immigration officer, a certain Pinpin, allegedly even uttered bad words, according to Pradhan.
“The conversation took place in Tagalog and the actual words spoken were ‘itong mga papel na hawak ko, pang-sampal sa mga taong sumasagot at walang galang katulad noong sumasagot. Mga papel na ganito magandang pangsampal sa mga taong gaya noon’,” Pradhan said.
Pradhan claimed that Rosales was denied the ability to travel as retribution for the questions he asked Yunus.
“This was an instance of personal retribution against me for daring to speak to Mr. Yunus about the immigration policies followed at Clark airport,” he said.
He added that he will call for the ouster of the immigration officers for their behavior.
Sun.Star Pampanga tried to interview officials from the BI but they refused to comment on the issue.
