Fisheries bureau to delineate Bataan, Pampanga coastal waters

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The coastal waters of Pampanga, particularly those in Macabebe, Masantol and Sasmuan and adjoining areas in Bataan will be subjected to delineation and mapping by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
This was disclosed by officials led by Provincial Board Committee on Environment and Natural Resources chairman and 4th district Board Member Nestor Tolentino during a hearing at the Capitol over the weekend.
The hearing was attended by Pampanga and Bataan officials, including the Philippine National Police and some of the 10 Kapampangan fishermen recently apprehended and jailed allegedly for illegal fishing and “encroachment” in Bataan waters.
The fisher folk were bailed out by Governor Lilia Pineda at P8,000 each.
Tolentino told Sun.Star Pampanga after the hearing and investigation that the stakeholders have agreed to have the coastal areas delineated and mapped by BFAR and The National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (Namria).
“At the soonest possible time, BFAR will lead in delineating the coastal waters in Macabebe, Masantol, Sasmuan and adjoining Bataan waters. The Namria will put in place the buoy markers and floaters as well as identify overlapping areas. By doing so, we could avoid the recent incident where our poor fisher folk out to make a living were jailed because of alleged illegal fishing and encroachment,” he said.
Additionally, Tolentino said, the Bantay Dagat patrols of the towns would be strengthened to monitor and control fishing in the concerned areas.
“The BFAR has given us five motor sets for additional pump boats for our Bantay Dagat. We hope that by strengthening them, we would be able to strictly monitor fishing in Pampanga coastal waters and enhance our coastal management program,” Tolentino said.
