Society leader may be cited in contempt for securing bank docs

SOCIETY leader Harvey Keh got a dressing down from the impeachment court on Wednesday when he allegedly tried to influence the senator-judges by forwarding bank records of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
Delivered to the office of Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile at the time the trial is entering its homestretch, Keh said he received the documents from anonymous people who placed them in a mailbox in their Quezon City office.
After receiving the bank records last May 3, Keh furnished a copy to Enrile, the court’s presiding officer, because he believed the senator-judges are the right individuals to make a decision on what to do with the documents.
An exasperated Enrile, who refused to open the documents, shot back at Keh as he ordered him to explain in writing why he should not be cited in contempt. No deadline was set.
“I felt insulted and offended as a presiding officer and I am ordering you to show cause why you should not be cited in contempt,” the Senate leader said.
Keh, lead convenor of the Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership, was called as hostile witness for the defense, which wanted to ventilate the issue of Corona’s alleged $10-million deposits in five banks.
For her part, fellow complainant Risa Hontiveros said she felt vindicated that the letter-request they filed before the Office of the Ombudsman had resulted in the discovery of the bank records.
“It is mind-boggling how the Chief Justice could amass the over 500 million peso equivalent of his dollar deposits while declaring a net worth of only P22.9 million in his 2011 statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN),” Akbayan Representative Walden Bello said.
As a result, Bello said Corona would be hard-pressed to explain to senator-judges his huge dollar deposits and why he did not include them in his SALN.
Last Monday, Morales said the complaints that Corona kept dollar deposits, which he did not declare in his SALNs moved her to seek the assistance of the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) in looking into his banking transactions.
The AMLC provided the Ombudsman a 17-page list of Corona’s dollar transactions since 2003 up to last year, covering 82 accounts. She said Corona’s accounts had a “transactional balance” of $10 million.
But Morales herself admitted during the re-direct examination of defense lead counsel retired Supreme Court Justice Serafin Cuevas on Tuesday that she did not verify the accuracy and the authenticity of the AMLC report.
