‘State university will not back out’

PORAC — Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University (DHVTSU) president Enrique Baking assured Sunday the state university will not back out of its deal with the Municipal Government in setting up a satellite campus in Barangay Pio here.
This as Porac officials reportedly settled issues regarding the memorandum of agreement concerning the satellite campus.
It could be remembered that Porac Councilor Mike Tapang had stressed three concerns to the Provincial Board (PB), including scholarships, priority of Poraqueños over others in enrolment, and the transfer of properties to DHVTSU after five years, on top of a P3-million operational expense subsidy.
The board ruled that the Porac Municipal Council’s wisdom on the agreement should be upheld and the requests of Tapang be heard.
Last week, Tapang was quoted to have agreed “in principle” to support the establishment of DHVTSU extension here after its proponents led by the mayor included the amendments he had asked for.
Vice Mayor Dexter David and Mayor Carling De La Cruz were quoted by reporters to have thanked Tapang for supporting the DHVTSU extension.
“We think it’s a win-win solution. Accommodating Councilor Tapang’s requests will finally pave the way for the full operation of DHVTSU at least by second semester of this year. We thank Councilor Tapang for supporting the satellite campus and being one with us in our advocacy of quality education for Poraquenos. The matter was settled in gentlemen’s ways and understanding,” the two said in a statement.
The salient points of the addendum, David further clarified, is that the Municipal Government will remain as “owners” of the satellite campus and its facilities after operations are formally turned over to DHVTSU.
“Another assurance in the MOA is that the Porac government will not be obliged to dish out the P3 million for operational expenses annually for 25 years after favorable review,” David added.
Earlier, Tapang expressed his concern on how the P3-million subsidy of the Porac government will be spent for the campus. After thanking in return the mayor and vice mayor, Tapang said he will wait for the breakdown of the P3-million subsidy to DHVTSU Porac contained in the addendum.
Baking, for his part, said the campus will start operation this June and will not be pulled out from Porac town.
“All officials are one in saying that the operation of the state university here will be beneficial to students of this town who would like to get quality and affordable education,” Baking said.
The campus will be offering Bachelor of Science Courses in Hotel and Restaurant Management, Industrial Technology, Information Technology and Technical Teacher Education.
