Doctors want Corona in hospital for 48 hours

MANILA (Updated 10:42 a.m.) — Doctors of Chief Justice Renato Corona advised him to stay in the hospital for 48 hours to monitor possible heart attack.
Corona was admitted at The Medical City in Pasig Tuesday night after having difficulty in breathing and dizziness due to hypoglycemia or low blood sugar.
Corona, a diabetic, arrived around 7:40 p.m. along with his wife Cristina at the hospital for his follow-up check-up, according to a report by radio dzMM on Tuesday.
DzMM said Wednesday morning that Corona’s doctors said the chief magistrate “is being treated for possible acute coronary syndrome or heart attack,” reason why he is in the intensive care unit and advised to stay there for 48 hours.
The radio report also said Corona’s cardiologist Dr. Marian Almajar, endocrinologist Dr. Michael Villa and The Medical City Senior Vice President for Medical Services Dr. Eugenio Jose Ramos advised him not to attend today’s hearing due to his condition.
Corona testified in his own impeachment trial Tuesday and denied all the allegations against him, including those pertaining to his alleged ill-gotten wealth.
After delivering a three-hour speech, he “excused himself” and left the witness stand despite not being discharged as a witness for the defense by the presiding officer.
An irritated presiding officer Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile then instructed the Senate sergeant-at-arms to bring Corona back inside the session hall and ordered a lockdown of all Senate gates and doors.
Corona, who is afflicted with diabetes, returned to the session hall in a wheelchair barely an hour after the trial was suspended. His lawyers told the court that the impeached chief magistrate had a hypoglycemic episode, so he had to excuse himself from the court.
His action, however, did not only irritate Enrile but also other government officials, analysts, and netizens.
“His walkout sent the message that his is the only voice that is important; and that furthermore, that he considers himself exempt from the basic processes of confronting testimony – the process by which courts discover the truth,” said presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda.
While Corona insisted the Bank Secrecy Law as reason for not declaring his dollar account in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth, Lacierda maintained that the chief magistrate is obliged to declare all his assets as mandated by the Constitution.
