Small businesses urged to register with trade department

MANILA – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) urged on Monday micro-businesses, particularly “tiangge” and “sari-sari” stores, to register with the Philippine Business Registry (PBR).
DTI Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya said it would be better for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to legalize their business so they can avail themselves of the government’s benefits.
“All kinds of businesses, whether large or small-scale, should register… so they can avail (themselves) of government services, and they can use their registered business name in marketing their business,” she said.
Tiangges and sari-sari stores are classified under the micro-enterprises. Micro-enterprises are defined as any business activity or enterprise engaged in industry, agribusiness, or services, whether single proprietorship, cooperative, partnership or corporation whose total assets amount to P3,000 or less and employs about one to nine persons.
Tiangges and sari-sari stores are considered informally as part of the “underground economy” due to its small business size and lack of business registration with appropriate government agencies.
Maglaya said the DTI has made it easier for entrepreneurs to register their businesses through the PBR, which was launched last March in all DTI field offices, to accommodate transactions for new business registrations.
A transaction will only take 15-30 minutes and will involve only a two-page PBR application form.
Owners of micro-business do not have to spend large amount of money to register their business, Maglaya said.
Maglaya said a micro-business pays only for the business name registration (BN), in which the amount depends on the preferred business scope.
A micro-entrepreneur, for example, who wishes to operate his store within a barangay will pay P200 for business name registration, while those who opt to operate within a town or city will pay P500.
“Registering a business name can provide assurance to the owners that their trade name is protected and cannot be used by other people or businesses,” she said.
According to Republic Act No. 3883 or the Business Name Law, a registered business holds the exclusive right to use its business or trade name in doing transactions.

Micro-entrepreneurs in the provinces can go to a nearest DTI provincial or regional Office in their area to avail themselves of PBR services
