Younghusbands lift Loyola over Burmese side in Singapore Cup

MANILA — Playing before a hostile crowd, the Loyola Meralco Sparks bannered by brothers James and Phil Younghusband managed to eke out a 3-1 victory over Myanmar’s Kanbawza at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore Thursday night.
Phil opened up the scoring for the Sparks’ quest to barge into the semifinals of the Singapore Cup in the 15th minute, as he fired a cracking shot that blew past goalie Kyaw Zin Htet, who was later sent to the bench because of injury.
Mark Hartmann, whose brother Matthew was the captain of the country’s Under-23 team in last year’s Jakarta Southeast Asian Games, hiked the lead in the 66th minute, when he pounced on a loose ball following Phil’s strike from the left side of the box.
The Kanbawza, currently running second in the Myanmar Premier League, didn’t raise the white flag early, as striker Soe Min Oo latched onto a long ball from the midfield line to finally beat Sparks’ goalie Ref Cuaresma with a header to move closer, 2-1.
But the team never allowed Kanbawza to equalize with James sealing the victory for the United Football League runner-up through a powerful shot that eluded the diving Zin in the first minute of stoppage time.
Compared to their debut game against Geylang United last May 18, the Sparks came out prepared and composed, Phil said after the two-hour match.
“We kept our heads in the game and got a great result. But it’s not yet over. There’s one more to play,” he said.
For his part, midfielder Anto Gonzales saw the win as a confidence booster going into the second leg of the quarterfinal series with Kanbawza on Sunday.
“We played much better. We were always talking out there as we covered for one another,” he said.
