Dream race today

CEBU CITY – Nearly 1,700 professional athletes and dedicated “age groupers” from 31 countries will chase their dreams in the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines that kicks off for the first time in Cebu today, Sunday.
For Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza, a bigger dream is at stake.
Win US$500. Join Sun.Star Cebu Yearbook Video Contest.
“The hosting of two Davis Cups in a five-star resort changed the rules of the game in our attempt to become the international sports tourism playground in Asia. The Ironman will further bolster our standing in the arena of sports tourism,” she said.
For thousands of Cebu residents, the advice from authorities is to bear with traffic, put off trips to Lapu-Lapu City or better yet, stand along the route and cheer for the participants.
Ironman competitors face a two-kilometer swim, a 90-kilometer bike that will take them from Mactan to Talisay City, and a 21-kilometer run in Punta Engaño.
Closures
For that, the first Mactan Bridge will be closed from 5 a.m. until noon today. Only the right lane of Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge leading to Mandaue City will be open to two-way traffic through the viaduct.
All side roads leading to the main highway in Lapu-Lapu will be closed during the event.
Authorities will close the road from Shangrila to Marcelo Fernan Bridge, Cebu International Convention Center, South Reclamation Project to Talisay City for the bike leg, from 5 a.m. until noon.
About 25,000 well-wishers coming from the Department of Education are expected to stay on the sidelines of the bike route.
The Lapu-Lapu City Traffic Management System (CTMS) advised those going to or coming from the Mactan airport to take the Sangi-Matumbo road.
The police also advised onlookers to be alert against pickpockets, snatchers or other criminal elements who might try to take advantage of the crowd.
Superintendent Noel Gillamac, director of the Mandaue City Police Office, said about 300 police officers will be deployed along the race route in Mandaue.
“The police in Mandaue are well prepared for this international event,” Gillamac said.
Preparation is also what’s been on Filipino elite veteran Arland Macasieb’s mind for many months now.
Pete’s feat
Macasieb is aiming to repeat as the Filipino men’s elite winner, or at least to improve his time. He faces 2009 champion Noy Jopson, Gerie Calinawan, Franz Baguio, Franklin Echavarria and veteran distance runners turned triathletes Mendel Lopez and John Philip Duenas.
Macasieb is also aiming for a podium finish in the pro division since his time last year would have been good enough for sixth overall in the pros, won by Pete Jacobs. Jacobs is also in Cebu for a three-peat attempt.
But while triathlon, in itself, is a hard sport, Macasieb has found something even more challenging: bringing up his four-month-old son Miles.
“Parenting is the hardest job there is; it can compromise everyone’s schedule. However, a lot of pro triathletes also have families and kids, just like three-time Ironman World Champion Craig Alexander, and they managed it. I am not saying it can be detrimental; if you are organized and focused, I don’t think that can be a problem,” said Macaseib.
A bonus from fatherhood? More motivation, he said.
Macasieb, who graduated with a degree in Exercise Science and Biology, started training for triathlons in 1995, when he was cut from the Rutgers University tennis team, an NCAA division 1 team in the United States.
Goals
“When I was not accepted, I tried looking for another sport. I stumbled upon triathlon when I became a lifeguard for Rutgers. Then I bought a bike and worked on my swim,” said Macasieb, a former track and field star in grade school before getting into tennis in high school.
Looking back, he said he never imagined in his life that his passion for triathlon would take him this far.
“I could not even imagine being on the cover of several magazines,” said Macasieb.
Macasieb still has that one goal in an accomplished career—to break his record of nine hours and 43 minutes in the full Ironman and qualify for the World Ironman Championships.
But this year, that will take a back seat.
“With the baby now, racing in the full Ironman is not my priority. Maybe, I can just pick one of those races where I can try to break nine hours and try to map out my plans for the future on how to qualify in Kona,” said Macasieb. He was the first Filipino finisher in the age group division of the World Championship in 1998.
There will be about 1,700 participants in today’s race.
They include Alaska Milk Corp. CEO Wilfred Uytengsu, Senator Pia Cayetano, Formula One champion Jenson Button, former Olympian Eric Buhain, motivational speaker Anthony Pangilinan, broadcaster Alejandro “Kuya Kim” Atienza, and show business personalities Richard Gutierrez, Piolo Pascual and Drew Arellano.
Fans eager for a glimpse of them were advised to line up along the race routes. Those who just need to move around Metro Cebu were advised to bear with the temporary traffic changes.
Where to go
All vehicles from Mandaue going to the airport should take S.B. Cabahug St. to Super Metro and turn right on UN Ave. to Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge.
All vehicles going to northern Cebu from Cebu City should take Lopez Jaena St. to M.C. Briones St. to J.P. Rizal St.
Vehicles going from Cebu City to Mandaue should take Lopez Jaena St. to A. del Rosario St.
In Lapu-Lapu, the road from Barangay Punta Engaño to Goldberry Hotel in Barangay Pusok will be closed from 5 a.m. until noon, except the Punta Engaño side of road up to Amisa Condominium, which will be reopened at 3:30 p.m.
The CTMS advised commuters to walk to Angasil Access Road for their ride. Motorists may take the Mactan-Marigondon Basak Road.
A portion of M.L. Quezon from the old Mactan Bridge to Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge will be closed to traffic from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Monday for the Race Dance. (With RSB of Sun.Star Cebu)

Tickets range from p500 to p1500 for these themed events that are professionally run –no wine merchants sponsorship, pushy wine salesmen or tacky banners to ruin the evening. Each wine tasting ticket contains a certain number of stubs that can be redeemed for a tasting pour of a wine among those on a line-up which often contains wines that are quite old and expensive. This is another reason why Yats Wine Cellars is generally regarded as the best wine supplier in the Philippines.
