Lawmaker starts distribution of relief goods

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Representative Aurelio Gonzales Jr. (3rd district, Pampanga) ordered on Wednesday the release of P1-million worth of relief goods to flood victims in different parts of the district following an aerial inspection.
Gonzales said the amount would be followed up with additional relief assistance as consolidated and verified reports of flood victims from different government agencies come in.
He said he will prioritize those heavily hit by the flooding.
“We have made an inspection of different areas in the district. It is very saddening that such a disaster has befallen our district. There are lots of areas that are still underwater and some even sustained damages to their properties,” Gonzales said.
Gonzales said he is now consolidating damage reports in Arayat, Sta. Ana, Bacolor, Mexico, and the City of San Fernando. Still unverified reports place the number of affected families in this city at 57,000.
The congressman said the relief goods are also being sourced from government agencies along with augmentation coming from his own funds.
Gonzales urged officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to start the inspection of major waterways here for the revival of the Pampanga River Control System (PRCS).
The lawmaker said the province now is in need of a renewed evaluation of river systems to fully address the problem of flooding, as the situation in the province’s river systems have drastically changed since the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo.
The lawmaker also conducted an aerial inspection of the province’s third district to further understand, which waterway is in need of urgent attention.
Gonzales inspected Sta. Ana town and has identified the Inuman Baka System as one that needs urgent attention.
Gonzales said the inspection had yielded valuable information on how the DPWH would be able to carry out the revival of the PRCS. The PRCS aims to appropriate a maintenance fund devoted to the upkeep and upgrading of the river systems.
The lawmaker added that the PRCS must also include development plans on a long-term basis on how to create new channels and fully upgrade the river system facilities like ripraps, concrete slope protection and the like.
“There should be a long-term study and master plan on how to address flooding in the next 10 to 20 years,” Gonzales said.
