City hosts Science and Technology Fair

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The city government hosted this year’s Southern Luzon Cluster Science and Technology Fair held on November 22 to 24 at Walter Mart Event Center.
Mayor Oscar S. Rodriguez opened the event with a special message emphasizing on the importance of the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) programs in improving people’s lives and supporting budding talents of aspiring scientists and inventors in the country.
“We should be keen in recognizing the efforts of the DOST by showing our trust and support in their programs as they provide us with efficient ways to help us become knowledgeable and be resilient amidst natural calamities and other difficulties,“ said Rodriguez.
Also present during the opening ceremonies were DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Dr. Carol M. Yorobe and DOST Regional Director Victor B. Mariano.
This year’s theme “Science, Technology and Innovation: Working Together for Growth and Development“ highlights the recent scientific breakthroughs and advanced technologies developed by government and private research institutions mainly by the DOST R&D institutes and councils as well as private academic institutions and state universities and colleges.
Among the seminar series lined up for the three-day event is a colloquium of completed DOST R&D projects, which include mature technologies ready for commercialization and adoption. These projects were made possible through funding support and technical assistance from the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technologies Research and Development (PCEERD-DOST).
The event also presents and features Project NOAH which is DOST’s response to the call of President Benigno S. Aquino III for a more accurate, integrated and responsive disaster prevention and mitigation system, especially in high-risk areas around the Philippines.
Project NOAH will harness technologies and management services for disaster risk reduction activities offered by the DOST through PAGASA, PHIVOLCS, and the DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI), in partnership with the UP National Institute of Geological Sciences and the UP College of Engineering. ●–Marna Dagumboy-del Rosario
