Pamintuan lands 8th place in World Mayor award

ANGELES CITY–Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan won as one among the top 10 most outstanding mayors in the world in the recently concluded 2012 World Mayor award.
Based on results released on Tuesday, the World Mayor Prize ranked Pamintuan as the 8th most outstanding mayor in the world based on the number of votes, achievements and quality of testimonials from their constituents.
In July, the World Mayor Prize 2012 shortlisted five mayors from North America, four mayors from Latin America, seven mayors from Europe, two mayors from Australasia and Africa, and five from Asia.
Mayors from Israel, Indonesia, South Korea, and Turkey, including Pamintuan from the Philippines comprised the Top 5 finalists from Asia.
Pamintuan qualified to the competition since he prioritized the intensification of programs concerning community and public health, quality and affordable education, and environmental preservation.
According to World Mayor’s website, Pamintuan was chosen for his “for specific achievements, including: being the first mayor to build a city college providing low-cost education; the planting of 200, 000 trees with help from volunteers, which apparently will help avoid flooding; the cleaning of major drainages and for modernizing the city hospital, including installing dialysis facilities.”
In a text message, Pamintuan thanked God, the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) staff and the League of Mayors, among others, for helping him win the prize.
“Thank you, Lord, for giving the Philippines another top mayor prize. Thank you LCP staff and the League of Mayors for helping me achieve all this accomplishments in less than a year,” Pamintuan said.
Pamintuan also thanked the late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo for “motivating me to work harder against all odds.”
“[Thank you also] to my wonderful staff and officers at city hall who contributed immensely in the successful implementation of my programs,” Pamintuan said.
City of San Fernando Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, who is also the national president of the LCP, congratulated Pamintuan.
“We are happy for Mayor Pamintuan’s inclusion in top ten World Mayor Prize. Another feather in the cap of Kapampangans and Filipinos,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez was also recognized as one of the top ten world mayor awardees in 2005.

The World Mayor Prize 2012 was topped by Bilbao City, Spain Mayor Inaki Azkuna.
Perth City, Australia Mayor Lisa Scaffidi was ranked second followed by Surakarta City, Indonesia Mayor Joko Widodo. On fourth place was Quebec City, Canada Mayor Regis Labeaume; fifth, El Paso, America Mayor John Cook; sixth, Changwon City, South Korea Mayor Park Wan-su; seventh, Auckland, New Zealand Mayor Len Brown; ninth, Zeraida, Algeria Mayor Mouhib Khatir and tenth, Matamoros City, Mexico Mayor Alfonso Sanchez Garza.
The World Mayor Prize is awarded every two years to a mayor who has made outstanding contributions to his/her community and has developed a vision for urban living and working that is relevant to towns and cities across the world.
