Pampanga taps green firm to dispose plastics

MABALACAT CITY—The provincial government has tapped a solid waste management company to properly dispose plastic and other garbage accumulated across the province everyday.

Paredes has introduced co-processing, a technology that destroys plastics and other wastes safely. By-products of the process can be used as substitute to fossil fuel such as coal.
“Co-processing destroys hazardous components of wastes while capturing its energy and mineral content in the production of cement,” Paredes said.
Geocycle Philippines is the waste management unit of Holcim Cement Philippines, Inc., a well-known cement manufacturer.
Hauling
Mabalacat City will be the first city in Pampanga to avail of the co-processing technology.
Governor Pineda on Friday supervised the hauling of plastic garbage from the city to the Geocycle’s plant in Norzagaray, Bulacan.
However, to cut back on hauling costs of P3,000 per truck load, Pineda suggested the use of bailers, which will compact plastics so more garbage can be placed in one sack.
She also suggested the creation of pick up points where garbage from all 19 towns and three cities of the province will be collected which will be picked up by Geocycle trucks along Quezon Road in San Simon.
“If pick-up point will be closer to Bulacan, hauling fee will be less expensive,” Pineda said.
Mabalacat MRF
After the discussion with Geocycle, Pineda inspected the city’s materials recovery facility (MRF) in Barangay Sapang Balen.
Pineda was surprised to see old men and women working as scavengers and segregating garbage at the facility. The garbage there even produced foul smell.
She asked the old workers to go home while she vowed to support them so they need not work anymore. Also, she asked all workers to go home until garbage smell is eliminated with the use of chemical treatment.
The governor will transfer the city’s MRF to a closer location as the current facility is in a far-flung area.
