Escudero backs bid to extend blood money deadline for OFW Ian Ocampo Flora
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Liberal Party reelectionist Senator Chiz Escudero has enjoined government’s call to raise the P44-million blood money for the liberty of Kapampangan Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Joselito Zapanta.
“I am enjoining the public to heed the government’s call for prayers and active contribution to raise the P44 million blood money for the liberty of Zapanta,” Escudero, chair of the Senate committee on Justice and Human Rights, said following the three months extension granted by Saudi government to Zapanta from execution.
The senator made this appeal shortly after government said it was having difficulty in raising the substantial amount despite the two previous extensions granted by the Saudi government and the family of the Sudanese killed by Zapanta in 2009.
He said saving the life of one Filipino should involve the combined efforts of all Filipinos of whatever persuasion or political leaning.
Escudero also stressed the need for a long-term solution that would make working abroad a career choice and not a livelihood necessity for Filipinos.
The government has also been negotiating for the reduction of the blood money.
Escudero has also earlier backed the government’s bid to extend the blood money deadline for Zapanta.
Zapanta, a native from Mexico town, went to Saudi Arabia to work as a tile setter in 2007. In 2009, Zapanta through self defense had accidentally killed his Sudanese landlord over an argument about his apartment rental.
